China
Myanmar
Oklahoma
We have all heard of what has happened in Myanmar. If you are like me you were probably reminded of the tsunami from 2005 or maybe hurricane Katrina. I thought this would be a stand-alone tragedy, because what are the chances of catastrophe of this magnitude happening twice in one year? Ironically, the world has been struck with another within a couple weeks. The expected death toll for Myanmar is potentially 127,000. The potential death toll for the china earthquake is 50,000. Possibly 180,000 fellow humans were killed this month by a cyclone and an earthquake! I live in Florida. Much of Brevard county is incinerated or in flames. dozens of homes have burned to the ground rendering families devastated. Oklahoma and Missouri have experienced death and devastation from tornados. Louisiana has declared a state of emergency because of excessive rain fall. Just moments ago, my home county (Escambia, Al) was issued, along with many others, a tornado warning.
I just emailed my friends in China that I am not sure how to respond. I feel very insignificant next to catastrophic damage. But, I do believe that millions responding to any degree is better than a few who can afford it. Church, let us not look to our governments to do what God has looked to His Son (and His son's church) to do. Mother Teresa said, " give until it hurts, until you feel the pain." Jocelyn and I are going to respond to Myanmar by giving to the relief efforts of World Vision.
Let us also pray to the one whose Son walks on oceans and sleeps in boats in the midst of storms. Let us call upon the power of the man who speaks to weather and it obeys him. God, please protect our world from another catastrophe .... please comfort those suffering.
Jocelyn and I had an amazing time last week at these two conferences we were able to attend:
New Church Conference
Lead Now Conference
Check out the sites and listen to the session podcasts. We were challenged particularly by Alan Hirsch and Bob Roberts .
Jocelyn and I are learning what it means to "really" be present. We do not want to live here and wait for God to show us what He wants us to do, because we are learning that God doesn't have a lay-away plan for his purposes. We believe that He wants us to love, serve and experience community in whatever circumstance we find ourselves. Yes, I am aware that I have already blogged about this but at that time we wanted to be present, but were not so in our hearts. He is teaching us to grow roots (that are always ready to be pulled by God, but strong roots non-the-less) in our current situation and not keep looking for the next thing. It could be that the next thing will evolve as a result of staying committed to the present.
My most recent life change has been a job at Disney's Boardwalk. I am a valet. We are chipping away at the bills and attempting to stabilize financially. My managers and co-workers are great guys and I must say that I have been having some fun with the job. Jocelyn is still hunting a job. Keep us in your prayers, more exciting things to come!
This man is hysterical...
Late Monday night Jocelyn and I returned from a short weekend trip to Alabama. We visited my family, celebrated Josh and Cynthia's (brother and soon to be sister) first wedding shower and THOROUGHLY enjoyed my mother's cooking. It was a much needed trip.
Ok. The last year or so I, like many americans, have been following the political scene. In case you are out of the loop (and do not have a t.v. or radio), one of these three people will lead our country by November: Barack Obama (D), Hillary Clinton (D), or John McCain (R). Please do not stop reading because this is in no way a dissection of any of the above listed candidates. This is indeed a reflection of my heart and quite possibly the hearts of many Christ followers in this country.
Myself and another person were watching animal planet several days ago and the topic was crocodiles. Now, I know a little bit about crocodiles and was sharing what i know with this other person. The particular crocodile that this show exploited was the Nile crocodile. Fun fact, Nile "crocs" are the second largest in the world next only to saltwater crocodilians. Back to the show. We watched the croc for a couple minutes and I said to the other person, " I hate those things." I immediately felt conviction in my heart because I know that God loves them and I should not have contempt for any of His creation, but they appear to be so "cold" and evil that it is hard for me to love them. The other person agreed and then the scene changed.
As it unfolded we discovered that this crocodile was a female and expecting mother. She lay her eggs and buried them. We were amazed at how long she struggled to safely secure those eggs under ground by pushing dirt with her hind legs. There was a time lapse that we were spared because of editing and then myself and this other person had a change of heart. The camera showed a monitor lizard digging out and eating all of the mother's eggs. The mother figured out what was happening from the water but she was too late, her eggs were gone. A very insightful truth uttered from my fellow watcher just as the lizard began eating the eggs, she said "awwww." Immediately, I began to think of pro-life, pro-choice and capital punishment. Many christ followers are COMPLETELY against any form of abortion, but when an adult makes a society-determined unforgivable choice (i.e. murder, rape, molestation) then he or she no longer deserves to have the right to live.
Those baby crocodiles were innocent in my eyes, but one day they will grow up and eat other animals and become dangerous to humans. I live in a broken world. Crocodiles live in a broken world. Rapist, Murders, Molesters and Terrorists live in a broken world. It is so easy to love an innocent baby who has not yet acted out in it's own brokenness, but as christians (not political party members) we must search GOD'S heart for justice in a broken world and not pray, believe or vote from a place of incongruence and conflict within ourselves. Is God a lover without boundaries? Are we?
So, let me first begin by saying the wedding was amazing and I love being married! If you haven't seen the pics go to this link and search for Haynes Davis wedding. I have sung his praises before but Robert Madrid was our photographer and he does AMAZING work. The honeymoon was glorious. I am uploading photos to this website and on to jocelynandjared.com today (sorry it took so long).
Ok, we returned to our little humble abode February 25th and began to unpack our presents, take things back, and understand what it means to live for another person in a context other than honeymoon bliss. I love my wife. We had a plan. We were ready to watch God make our plan happen. But God had a different plan than the one that Jocelyn and I had assigned to Him (being an affluent God who knows what he wants and all). We discovered this through an amazing phenomena that occurs between man and wife that we will call "heart alignment." I have heard many married persons say, "that when God begins to speak to one of us, he often times speaks to the other." Let us be frank, this sounds like something that married couples say to keep up the appearance of making decisions together. In reality it is a real deal "God thing" that occurs, and it is so encouraging.
What God was speaking to Jocelyn and I that day was a very clear unclarity. He wants us to wait and stay open. That's it. The hard part is staying present to where we are now. If you know me then you immediately hear the irony in that truth, because that has been my soap box to young adults for the past year or so; just be present. We are going to live missionally no matter where we live or what our jobs might be until we hear His next words for us. Currently, His words are "wait, stay open."
I hope you enjoy this teaching from Saturday Church on January 19th. You will need headphones.
It's time I blog about HER. Her name is Jocelyn Haynes. I met HER earlier this year, but in the last few months have fallen flat on my face in love. That is normally an embarrassing sort of thing for me to type, but not with HER. She is a youth pastor, who stepped down from her most recent position in Indiana and moved to Florida to see what was next. God had been moving on my heart that it was time for me to move on from my current pastoral position with Celebrate church as the young adult pastor. Shortly after I began to fall for Jocelyn, that is exactly what I did. I am thankful for the leadership at Celebrate Church and Pastor Joe Saragusa who has been more than just a pastor to me over the past 4 years.
Anyway, back to HER. She makes me "silly." She is the one, and yes I have told her that; and yes she feels the same way. I thank God for the love He has brought to me during this transitional time in my life. Jon Tyson (originsnyc ) said at a conference in early October that we have moments in our lives when the question is not "what time is this happening," but rather "what's happening in this time?" I believe that God brought Jocelyn and I together, and together we are asking Him, "what is happening in this time... Stay tuned for more to come on HER...
